I don't remember how long they where away, bit was some weeks. When I brought them home things went on just the same. I studied the situation and came to a conclusion. I reasoned that no sane woman would act like my wife was acting. No sane loving mother would lye in bed and then give her children a piece of bread and a drink of milk then push them of to school. No sane loving mother would go off and leave five young children for the father to care for. No sane children would deprive her husband of earning the money to support his family. Therefore I became convinced there was something wrong with her mind. I wondered if it was possible for me to have her mentally examined. This opportunity came one morning quite unexpectedly. For some reason she picked on Francis and beat him knocking him down. When she tried to beat him again he put his foot up to protect himself. She said, you would dare kick your mother and she went for a stick to beat him some more but I took the stick from her and picked Francis up. His face was bleeding so I cleaned him up and took him out. I took him to the Children's aid society where I spoke to a lady by the name of Mrs. Scott. I told her what had happened, but I said, I haven't come her to complain about my wife's conduct in the hope I can have her punished I am convinced she is mentally ill and I would like to have her mentally examined. I wonder if you could help to have that done. Mrs. Scott said I think we can Mr. Bass. With the help of the Family Welfare Bureau I think we can have it done.
A few days latter a lady from the Family Welfare Bureau came to see me. She said I don't know how I can persuade your wife to see a doctor, can you help me Mr. Bass? I said go into the kitchen and talk friendly with her, then bring your conversation round to her health. Tell her she not looking too well, then advise her to go to the clinic to see a doctor, she likes to visit the doctor. The lady did as I told her and she had no difficulty in persuading your mother to go to the clinic. Dr. Glassco was in the hospital at the time and Dr. Kriner of the Ontario Hospital was conducting his clinic. Two week afterwards I went to see Dr. Kriner and he told me that my wife had very low intelligence but he could not say was any worse than that.
That did not satisfy me. No sane woman would act like she did. I was the only person in the world that could help her. I loved her and wanted to do everything possible to help her but she would not let me. I tried to make her understand this but she thought I was trying to deceive her. She thought I was trying to frighten her. I told her that God had given us six lovely children and He expects us to take care of them. I was willing to work night and day for you and my children but you must play your part too.
